The Chardonnay grape variety belongs to the Noiriens family, it is a natural descendant of Pinot Noir, coupled with the Gouais Blanc grape variety. If it is present all over the world, its mother country remains Burgundy. In the Middle Ages, it was called Beaunois in Côte-d'Or. Its geographical origin must probably be located in the Mâconnais in Saône-et-Loire. Indeed, it is mentioned in 1865 as the "best goldfinch but in small quantities in Saint-Sorlin" (currently La Roche-Vineuse). In the 19th century, winegrowers spoke of Chardenet or Chaudenet.
Chardonnay likes fairly heavy, clayey and deep soils. It achieves a high expression between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. It also reveals many other aspects of its character on the Butte de Corton or along the Côte de Beaune. Over the centuries, winegrowers have been able to select the best plants, asserting more than ever the inseparable trilogy of grape variety-terroir-climate.
The territories in the Regional Appellation, although larger than those of the wines in the Village, Premier Cru or Grand Cru appellations, have the same Burgundian origin as them. Like them, they benefit from the same northern climate. They come from the erosion of the same clay-limestone slopes of the vineyard, but rest on richer and deeper soils.
For our Bourgogne Blanc, we have selected plots located in the Clos de la Combe in Puligny-Montrachet, in the village of Corpeau which adjoins that of Puligny-Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune and in the Mâconnais.
