Turley, Cinsault, Bechthold Vineyard, Lodi, California 2023
Planted in 1886, this Cinsault vineyard is the oldest of its kind in the country. The vines are gnarly, head-trained and planted on their own roots. A light-bodied red grape, Cinsault is usually found in the south of France as a component of Châteauneuf-du Pape in the Rhône Valley, or consumed as rosé in Provence.
The Turley Lodi Cinsault is light-bodied, tart, perfumed, and extremely well balanced. Stunningly ruby-colored and brilliant yet translucent, almost jewel-like, in the glass. Lifted aromatics of spiced cherry, pomegranate, peach, and light nougat. Fresh, lip-smacking medium-plus acidity and lush, silky fruit glide along the structured yet velvety palate. The tannins are reminiscent of Burgundy, with just a touch of grip and a long finish.
Whole cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Aged in 100% used French oak for 7 months.
This Cinsault has a unique depth and complexity that can only be found in a wine from truly ancient vines. Serve this wine lightly chilled. If you prefer more body, this bottle will take on weight with time, and will age very well.
Turley Wine Cellars was founded in Napa Valley by former emergency room physician Larry Turley in 1993. Under the direction of winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, Turley now makes 50 different wines from over 50 vineyards across California, primarily Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, with many vines dating back to the late 1800s. By farming organically and focusing on old vine vineyards of these varieties, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture.
